HELL: Sheowl, Hades, Tartaroo, Geenna

The Bible is Clear about HELL
The topic of HELL is the most unpleasant topic in the world today, even amongst Christians. Why? Because we can't fathom that a loving God would send any of His creation there. Therefore, let me begin with this scripture that shows us how people deal with this topic that would rather avoid it:
2 Timothy 4:3-4 "For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but wanting to have their ears tickled, they will accumulate for themselves teachers in accordance to their own desires, and will turn away their ears from the truth and will turn aside to myths."
So, if you are ready to endure sound doctrine, keep on reading, for the Bible is clear about Hell. We will be looking at the various definitions of our English translation by using the exact Hebrew and Greek words and the context in which these words are used.
How does the Bible define HELL?
I did a word study, using a Strong's concordance, on the word HELL. There are four different words used in the original languages of the Bible. The only one used in the Old Testament was #7585: sheowl (sheh-ole’) meaning hades or the world of the dead (as if a subterranean retreat), including its accessories and inmates: grave, hell, pit.
Old Testament verses are as follows:
(Hebrew #7585 sheowl; translated the same as Greek #86 hades)
De 32:22; 2 Sa 22:6; Job 11:8 & 26:6; Ps 9:17, 16:10, 18:5, 55:15, 86:13, 116:3 and 189:8; Pr 5:5, 7:27, 9:18, 15:11 & 24, 23:14 and 27:20; Isa 5:14, 14:9 & 14:15, 28:15 & 28:18 and 57:9; Eze 31:16 & 31:17, 32:21 & 32:27; Am 9:2; Jon 2:2; Hab 2:5.
The New Testament consists of three words for HELL: #1067: geenna (gheh’-en-nah) used as a name for the place (or state) of everlasting punishment: - hell; #86: hades (hah’-dace) “hades” or the place (state) of departed souls: - grave, hell; and #5020: tartaroo (tar-tar-o’-o) the deepest abyss of hades; to incarcerate in eternal torment: - cast down to hell.
New Testament verses are as follows:
(Greek #1067 geenna)
Mt 5:22 & 5:29, 10:28, 18:9, 23:15 and 23:33; M'r 9:43, 9:45 and 9:47; Lu 12:5; Jas 3:6. Lake of Fire: Mat 25:41; Rev 19:20; 20:10, 14-15 and 21:8.
(Greek #86 hades)
Mt 11:23 & 16:18; Lu 10:15 & 16:23; Ac 2:27 & 2:31; Re 1:18, 6:8, 20:13 and 20:14.
(Greek #5020 tartaroo)
2 Pe 2:4
There is some information regarding the “deepest abyss of hades”, which is known as tartaroo (tar-tar-o’-o). 2 Peter 2:4 states that this is where the fallen angels who sinned are incarcerated. For more information on the fallen angels, please see my hub The Origin of the Nephilim. In Revelation 9:11, there is a king of the abyss whose name in Hebrew is Abaddon/Greek: Apollyon (a destroying angel, who is the second beast or antichrist). This bottomless pit is shown to have a cover, that when opened releases not only “smoke of a great furnace” (verse 2), but beings like "locusts" (verse 7-9). This is the same bottomless pit in which the dragon (Satan) will be bound during the thousand-year reign (Rev 20:3).
The Lake of Fire, which is the final destination for the second beast (antichrist) and the false prophet (at the beginning of the thousand-year reign of Christ), and then for the dragon (Satan) and those people whose names are not found in the Lamb’s Book of Life (at the Great White Throne judgment after the thousand-year reign of Christ) is actually geenna (gheh’-en-nah). Mark 9:49 describes it based on Isaiah 66:24, “where their worm does not die, and the fire is not quenched.” Revelation 14:10-11 states"...he will be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels and in the presence of the Lamb. And the smoke of their torment goes up forever and ever; and they have no rest day and night, those who worship the beast and his image, and whoever receives the mark of his name." For more on the Lake of Fire, I have a hub called The Location of HELL.
The point is, the Bible written in English uses the same word "hell" for all the definitions shown above. So, read the scriptures listed above for each definition to get a better view of the context in which the word hell is used. Some people just choose not to believe in hell at all (as though that will just make it go away). Hell is a very real place for souls who refuse to receive Jesus Christ, who is the only One who can save them from this fate. So, while our fleshly body corrupts in the grave (also called hades in some contexts), those without Christ are said to be condemned to "hell", also called hades, and eventually condemned to geenna, the Lake of Fire. You can read more in my hub Beyond Death: What the Bible Says. Here's an example of a soul tormented in hades shown in the Bible:
Let's look at what Jesus shares about hell in Luke 16:19-31 (regarding the soul of the rich man in hades, not geenna):
Now there was a certain rich man, and he habitually dressed in purple and fine linen, gaily living in splendor every day.
And a certain poor man named Lazarus was laid at his gate, covered with sores and longing to be fed with the crumbs which were falling from the rich man's table; besides, even the dogs were coming and licking his sores.
Now it came about that the poor man died and he was carried away by the angels to Abraham's bosom; and the rich man also died and was buried.
And in hades he (the rich man) lifted up his eyes, being in torment, and saw Abraham far away, and Lazarus in his bosom.
And he cried out and said, "Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water and cool off my tongue; for I am in agony in this flame."
But Abraham said, "Child, remember that during your life you received your good things, and likewise Lazarus bad things; but now he is being comforted here, and you are in agony. And besides all this, between us and you there is a great chasm fixed, in order that those who wish to come over from here to you may not be able, and that none may cross over from there to us."
And he (the rich man) said, "Then I beg you, Father, that you send him to my father's house for I have five brothers that he may warn them, lest they also come to this place of torment."
But Abraham said, "They have Moses and the Prophets; let them hear them."
But he (the rich man) said, "No, Father Abraham, but if someone goes to them from the dead, they will repent!"
But he (Abraham) said to him (the rich man), "If they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, neither will they be persuaded if someone rises from the dead."
I had a reader state that Jesus never talked about hell. Now, that's a very ignorant statement. Look at all the passages in the first four gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. How about Revelation 1:1-2? "The Revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave Him to show to His bond servants, the things which must shortly take place; and He sent and communicated it by His angel to His bond servant John; who bore witness to the word of God and to the testimony of Jesus Christ, even to all that he saw." In this case, all the accounts of hell in Revelation are also the "revelation of Jesus Christ". Jesus talked more about hell than anyone. Who else would know? Do you know anyone else who existed before being born? How about someone who died and came back to life to tell you about it? And if they did, would you believe them any more than the rich man's brothers would?
The Burden of PROOF
Based on the scripture of Ephesians 2:8-9, "For by grace are ye saved through FAITH, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest any man should boast." Good people are not righteous enough for God! You MUST have His Son's righteousness, which comes only through salvation. If you don't know that you're saved, I invite you to read my hub Come to JESUS: Salvation.
So we're saved through FAITH in what? What is FAITH? Hebrews 11:1 states, "Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen." How can the believer prove something the unbeliever can't see? This is the miracle of faith. Faith comes by hearing and hearing by the Word of God! (Romans 10:17) Then, the human (blind) eyes shall see through Spiritual eyes and understanding.
How do we ESCAPE HELL?
The Bible says that the sacrifice of the Lamb of God, Jesus Christ, was planned from the foundation of the world. Hell was originally reserved for just the devil and his angels (Matthew 25:41). God made the Way for you since the beginning of time to choose spiritual life over spiritual death. He is longsuffering in waiting for us to make this choice. 2 Peter 3:9 states, "The Lord is not slacking concerning His promised return, as some men count to slacking, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that anyone should perish (eternal hell), but that all should come to repentance (salvation = eternal heaven).
Jesus said in John 14:6 that “I AM the WAY, the TRUTH and the LIFE; no man comes to the Father except through Me.”
WHY do we need Jesus? The answer is that God is holy and is perfectly righteous. There can be NO SIN in His Kingdom. In the Old Testament (before Jesus Christ), believers had to sacrifice a lamb to atone for thier sin. Jesus is called the "Lamb of God" in that He sacrificed His own blood on a cross for our sin. 2 Corinthians 5:21 states, "He [God] made Him [Jesus] who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might be made the righteousness [sinless] of God in Him."
1 John 5:12 states "He who has the Son has the life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have the life."
Revelation 3:20-23 states "Behold I (Jesus) stand at the door (to your heart) and knock; if anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him, and will dine with him, and he with Me. He who overcomes, I will grant to him to sit down with Me on My throne, as I also overcame and sat down with My Father on His throne. He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches."
I truly share this in love. I know everyone reading this is meant to be here. Have faith in Him, and take as many people with you to where God is: Our Father, who art in Heaven (Mat. 6.9–13; Luke 11.2–4) while there is still time!!

You have done a good work the understanding of the Word is the Truth and the many meaning's are right on. And the Scripture's are a Blessing to all who need to understand our Lord. God Bless You in all your work for him. Amen
Loved the article JD, excellent research in breaking down the chambers of hell, keep up the good work JD.
The Scriptures clearly state:
"He that saith he is in the light, and hateth his brother, is in darkness even until now. He that loveth his brother abideth in the light, and there is none occasion of stumbling in him. But he that hateth his brother is in darkness, and knoweth not whither he goeth, because that darkness hath blinded his eyes"(1 John 9:11).
God most richly bless you, Judah's Daughter. Be of good courage and cheer, for when you are attacked it is from the enemy, and is inspired by the enemy satan himself. We must remember that the god of this world has blinded the minds of those who believe not ...(@ Cor. 4:4).
Hi, I am relatively new here to hubpages and have enjoyed my time here. I've published one article with another waiting to see if there are any copyright issues to deal with using a photo I found on the web. This aricle, when published will be right in line with your hub.
I couldn't help but notice the "Comments" by Hell No who said, "...Your god is the most cruel thing ever invented..." (To quote one) It's kind of interesting, if not sad that people see God this way, but not surprising, when you stop to consider that we all might just actually be guilty as charged. Some will fight this to the death because it does not fit their preconceived notion of who God is. And the fact that we are accountable to Him. Yet you take a look at all the ways our society is unravelling all around us, the big push to "free ourselves from any moral restraint..." The real amazing thing is that God hasn't already judged everyone to eternal hell. No, it's always easier to blame God than face His truth which really is His-Story. To say that all "will be saved" makes God accountable to us. And that is something He will never be.
To God be the Glory! He truly is a loving God. Amen!
Well, some good news I published the hub I was telling you about. I forgot the title already (lol) oh well pull up my profile and all can see it. Haven't decided on the nephilum hub you published. made for very interesting reading. will probably drop you a note on that one later.
Keep up the great work sister.
Another informative and convincing hub. Thanks
Your hubs are really good reads!
Keep them coming, I am reading and learning.
Bless you and yours... Jesus is profound love >
Judah's Daughter, Very Good! You did a thorough job here! The lake of fires which is hell is the final destination for death and the wicked meaning all those who do not accept Jesus Christ as Savior & LORD! If your name is not in the book of life you are going in the fire! Revelation is quite clear on this...
Most people don't want to talk about "hell" out of fear or simply ignore that it even exists. Just like there is an "In" there is an "Out!" Just like there is and "Up" there is a "Down!" Jesus is the Door to Heaven you can't get "In" any other way. Therefore you are not going "Up" you are going "down!"
Yes as children of God we will go through some things here on earth. The prince of the power of the air seeks to disrupt our lives any way he can and use whom every he can to do so. But we can ALWAYS have HOPE in JESUS because whatever happens He has the last word! As we TRUST HIM He WILL lead us in the "path of rigtheousness!" We will live in eternity with Him! The LORD keeps His promises of this we can be sure, when you truly accept JESUS CHRIST in your heart!
Again Wonderful hub! I think if more people had a better picture of the reality of "hell" they just might choose to do some things differently! I receive this is the love in which it was given! Blessings to you my sister for a very wise, well presented, thought provoking hub!
Judah's Daughter,
GOD'S plan of SALVATION is what SAVES us from eternal damnation! We recieve ETERNAL LIFE with HIM through JESUS CHRIST!!! This is why we are in NEED of a SAVIOR! (Otherwise its going to hell with the non believers...)
hell is a real place! But we HIS CHILDREN DO NOT have to worry about going there! Great example! How come the rich man was not able to just walk over and tell his brother?
John in Revelations tells us; "When I saw HIM, I fell at His feet as though dead. Then HE place HIS right hand on me and said; DO NOT BE AFRAID. I AM THE FIRST AND THE LAST. I AM the living one; I was dead, and behold I AM ALIVE FOR EVER AND EVER. AND I HOLD THE KEYS OF DEATH AND HADES..."
Thank you again sister for a great much needed "Message" that is Powerful & Spiritfilled! BLESSINGS & PRAISE GOD!
There also is a tape recording of people in hell. A Drilling team in Russia at the turn of the last centry drilled until they hit a hollow in the earth. They stopped drilling and lowered a mic. The could hear voices in torment. It played on Crefloe Dollars ministry TV show.
Actually if you want my take on it. There are 12 openings on the earth that lead to hell. But it is a one way trip.
There are 12 different places on the earth like the Bermuta triangle. I once was a sailor on a little navy Ship.
I read that book 23 Minutes in Hell and believed it myself. But now that I have researched it, I can't say that anymore. He is clearly lying or very deluded. Their are SO many contradictions between his interviews and book. You need to have the honesty to research this. If we really believe this guy saw all this and it is accurate, than we need to add this into the cannon of scripture. The reality is, everyone who seems to have these NDE's or OBE's of hell all contradict each other. Shouldn't that tell us something? Most of these people already believe in hell. If you want to see stats on this, it is very interesting:http://www.near-death.com/experiences/evidence06.h This is a very thorough site. Here is an excerpt: "The category with the highest percentage seeing hell were those in the Christian (38%) category. The lowest percentage were those in the non-religious (0%) category." Makes you wonder.
I can prove he is lying quite easily actually without you having to research. Jesus says the demons and Satan are being PUNISHED in the "fire"... whatever that is. Bill, however, says they are actually quite enjoying their time there, ripping off limbs and such (page 6 of book). That they derive amusement from their abuse on humans. That it is THEY who are running the show there. This is SUCH a mockery to God's judgment to say such un-biblical things. And if they are enjoying their punishment in hell, than than what is to stop humans from enjoying their time there and get amusement from abusing the demons back?
You can read all the contradictions here: http://bible-truths.com/23-minutes-in-hell.html#Co .
Please... it makes Christians look gullible when we promote people like this. We need to have discernment or else we look like fools to the world. I was guilty of this myself, I am afraid to say. These stories don't scare unbelievers nor make them believe, because they don't believe in such a place anyway. I mean, what if I told you how bad the Muslim hell is? Would you care? We do more damage when we promote these because if someone comes to Christ out of fear, based on his book, only to learn his book is a lie, they are never going to trust Christians again.
Hey JD, Thanks for understanding. I am just frustrated because we end up looking like fools to the outside world when we promote stuff like this. I don't know anything about fallen angels vs. demons (although one demon does mention something about the appointed time, meaning they are judged too). I am just saying that Satan and his angels/demons go into the lake of fire as punishment. Their punishment isn't to have fun torturing humans. Their punishment is whatever God deems just. But it is punishment. Not something they enjoy.
We agree that what we believe doesn't determine our after-death fate. God is perfectly just and will handle that. If God chooses to annihilate people after punishment, than so be it. If he chooses to punish people for eternity, than that is what he does. The Bible is not clear on exactly what the lake of fire does though, so we should not be either.
Great job of providing Biblical proof of eternal damnation(Lake of fire) and differentiating the proper definitions for Hell, Judah's Daughter! Your article makes one of the strongest argument against the Universalist doctrine (belief that God will save everyone and not send anyone to the Lake of fire). In actuality, God doesn't condemn any to Hell, we condemn ourselves there because of THEIR OWN DISOBEDIENCE and denial or refusal of God's Atonement(The LORD JESUS). Thank GOD Almighty for your perseverance and diligence in giving Biblical scholarship to such a devastatingly important subject. We need more people within the Body of Christ to do what you are doing - present God's infallible word (the original sacred texts)from a scholarly, yet fundamentalist standpoint based upon extreme reverence to the Scriptures'(and ultimately God's)intended context.
Dear Daughter of Judah,
I really loved this article as you can tell by my first comment, but I'm having difficulty with agreeing with one of your comments regarding "where is Hell" - you said that " I really do believe Hell is in the depths of the earth based on my Bible study of fire and brimstone."
I would disagree wirh this thought because of these verses -
Rev 20:10 "And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever."
Rev 21:1 "And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea." By "passed away',
John means "to neglect or to perish' (Gr. - "parerchomai" -Strong's-G3928). John is referencing Jesus' (Yeshua's)statement in Matt. 24:35 - Heaven and earth shall "pass away" (perish), but My words shall not pass away (perish). If Hell were under the earth, it would "perish" or be destroyed when the earth is destroyed or removed, thus, Rev 20:11 "And I saw a great white throne, and him that sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away; and there was found no place for them." and Rev 20:14 And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.", would be untrue. Since Yeshua's words {see also Mar 9:45-46 "And if thy foot offend thee, cut it off: it is better for thee to enter halt into life, than having two feet to be cast into hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched:" "Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched.") will come to pass (those words given to John, in this case), Hell cannot be under or a part of the earth. Just my take on the thought of where Hell is - it really is just a minr point. But, the MAJOR point and what is REALLY important is that where ever Hell is, no one should want to go there for eternity (Lake of fire). Still, this article itself, is a great resource and teaching tool about Hell and I am thankful for it.
Hi Judah's Daughter,
I can see how you arrived at that conclusion and that would make sense. And no matter where Hell is, thank GOD that we are not appointed to HIS wrath. As I said in my previous comment, this was merely a minor issue regarding Hell's location - certainly you, mself, and all believers are so grateful that Yeshua was our Pascal Lamb for the permanent atonement of our sin. I pray that you and your much, much needed ministry are strengthened in The LORD. Be encouraged my sister! Keep striving for the prize, the end is so very near and there are too many to reach now that we have so little time! GOD bless.

Very well written article concerning hell. You did a great job in presenting the facts and truth of the matter. I especially like how you studied the word hell and the original words used in the Bible.
