KARMA and Christianity

The Karmic Philosophy
What is karma? There are some Christians today that believe in karma, being careful to think, speak and do good in order to rest assured that no evil will befall them. If they understood what karma really is, they might realize the error of this type of thinking. Karma is a concept rooted in Indian and other Eastern religions that one’s own thoughts, words or deeds bring about the cycle of cause and effect. Karma is a religious belief system adopted by Hindu, Jain, Sikh and Buddhist philosophies. They believe each person’s behaviors (even from past lives) actively shape his or her present and future experiences. They are “works-focused” religions.
For a Christian to “believe” in karma is to think the “reap what you sow” biblical concept applies to our earthly outcome, though orchestrated by God. This is right in line with Hinduism. A good summary of the theistic view of karma is expressed by the following: "God does not make one suffer for no reason nor does He make one happy for no reason. God is very fair and gives you exactly what you deserve." Have you ever read the book of Job? Now, the atheistic view of karma, according to the Jainism perspective, is that the individual is the one in control of his or her own karma.
Consider that the Vedas follow the atheistic way of thinking ~ that if we sow goodness we will reap goodness; if we sow evil we will reap evil. Though Hindus are theistic, nearly all existing sects are directly or indirectly influenced by the Gnostic systems developed by Vedantic thinkers, of which the goal is a state of self-realization or “cosmic consciousness”. ..very New Age.
Ever so subtly, Christians can be drawn into this pagan way of thinking. Surely, it is not godly!! While karma is the philosophy that we sow earthly seed and reap earthly rewards, the Bible encourages us to sow heavenly seed to reap heavenly rewards. What’s the difference?
Reap What You Sow
If we always reap what we sow, the Bible would clearly confirm this. To the contrary; let’s look at just a few passages of scripture that contradict karmic philosophy:
In Jeremiah 12:1 we see that the wicked actually REAP (prosper) in this world! “Righteous are You, O LORD, that I would plead my case with You; Indeed I would discuss matters of justice with You: Why has the way of the wicked prospered? Why are all those who deal in treachery at ease?”
On the other hand, God can thwart the reaping of the wicked. This truly shows that karma is not a Biblical concept:
Jeremiah 12:13: “They have sown wheat and have reaped thorns, they have strained themselves to no profit. But be ashamed of your harvest because of the fierce anger of the LORD."
Hosea 8:7: “For they sow the wind and they reap the whirlwind. The standing grain has no heads; it yields no grain. Should it yield, strangers would swallow it up.”
Micah 6:15: “You will sow but you will not reap. You will tread the olive but will not anoint yourself with oil; and the grapes, but you will not drink wine.”
And sometimes, God works quite the opposite of karma:
Psalm 126:5: “Those who sow in tears shall reap with joyful shouting.”
Matthew 6:26: “Look at the birds of the air, that they do not sow, nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not worth much more than they?”
But what about the scripture that says, “Whatever a man sows, this he will also reap”? Let’s read this in context, and then understand its meaning:
Galatians 6:7-9: “Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, this he will also reap. For the one who sows to his own flesh will from the flesh reap corruption, but the one who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap eternal life. Let us not lose heart in doing good, for in due time we will reap if we do not grow weary.” What is this talking about? When we put our faith in works in order to determine our earthly outcome, we are sowing to the flesh. When we put our faith in Christ we are sowing to the Spirit and reap eternal life!
Understand the Sower and the Seed
In Matthew 13:24-30, we read the parable of the sower and the seed. The One who sows good seed (wheat) is God. However, Satan then comes along and sows bad seed (tares) among the good. The “good seed” represents the children of God; the “bad seed” are the children of Satan. Indeed, the workers question the Sower as to whether they should pull up the tares right away! They are told to let the tares remain; for if the tares are pulled up now, some of the wheat might get pulled up, too. Both must grow together until the time of the harvest.
Seed produces more seed, right? So what exactly IS the seed we are to sow? Is it literal wheat? Does it represent money? Is it good or bad deeds? Luke 8:11 tells us, “Now the parable is this: the seed is the Word of God.”
Jesus Christ is the Word made flesh (John 1:14) and is the first “seed” sown in God’s “field”. Galatians 3:18 confirms this: “Why the Law [of Moses] then? It was added because of transgressions, having been ordained through angels by the agency of a mediator [Moses], until the seed [Jesus Christ] would come to whom the promise had been made.” Speaking of mediators, the New Covenant now makes Jesus Christ the only Mediator between God and man (1 Timothy 2:5).
Someone sowed that seed in me, praise God! 1 Peter 1:23 states, “For you have been born again not of seed which is perishable but imperishable, that is, through the living and enduring word of God.”
Is the seed of the gospel planted in you? Is it taking root? Do you sow the seed of the gospel unto the harvest of souls? If we have the seed of Christ in us, we now labor to sow this seed (the gospel) in His field (the world). For more on this seed, read another of Jesus’ parables found in Matthew 13:3-8; 18-23 and Luke 8:4-15.
However, contrary to karmic philosophy, we won’t necessarily reap what we sow! John 4:38 states, “I sent you to reap that for which you have not labored [sown]; others have labored and you have entered into their labor."
And 1 Corinthians 3:7 states, “So then neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but God who causes the growth.”
The Harvest is Ripe!
Earlier we read that the wheat and tares will grow together “until the time of the harvest”. What exactly is “the harvest”? We already distinguished that the world is the field made up of wheat and tares. The wheat are the saved; the tares are those who attempt to choke off or destroy the wheat ~ WEEDS. We, as the good seed, sow more seed (the gospel) into the field (the world). Unfortunately, the tares spread like wildfire, too! The harvest happens at the end of the age. First, the tares will be gathered and bound, then thrown into the fire. Then, the wheat will be harvested into the barn (heaven).
Until then, we remember the words of Jesus found in Matthew 9:37: “Then He said to His disciples, ‘The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few.’”
We can stand on His promise found in 2 Corinthians 9:10: “Now He who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will supply and multiply your seed for sowing and increase the harvest of your righteousness.” Well, we know this really isn’t “our” righteousness, but the righteousness of God in us. And, it is not we who bring the increase, but God.
As we can see, believers who think that karma is a Christian concept are mistaken (missing the mark). We are to hold fast to the seed of Christ’s gospel in us. Nothing we think, say or do determines a karmic cycle, for the Bible tells us that our “righteous works” are as filthy rags to the Lord (Isaiah 64:6), and that our righteousness is only in Jesus Christ, our Savior (2 Corinthians 5:21)! It is not by faith in our works (karma), but faith in Him whereby we are saved (Ephesians 2:8-9)! In fact, those who have the attitude of “entitlement” because of good works (even works done in His name) will be told to “Depart from Me, you who work iniquity!” (Matthew 25:41). Be blessed this day ~ Beloved, stay on the narrow path of Truth! Amen.

This is really great Judah's daughter! Merry Christmas to you and your family.
I hear people use the term "kharma" all the time. I hear people I know are saved use it. When I tell them that it is not a Christian concept they look at me like I had as many arms as that "what her name" god. I learned a lot from this hub and I thank you for it. I love you bunches and bunches.
Very nice hub. Does (charisma) fit in to this category also? I've heard a few say something like he or she really has charisma. I was aware of the ideals of Karma being rooted in Hindu for some time, but your hub is most enlightening to the enquiring, curious mind.
God Bless and may the peace of Jesus be with you. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year JD.
great hub,
There is no other direction that we should follow other than the true word of God. Paul said, that in the last days, even the very elect of God would be deceived. I've also heard people, who probably don't know God, speaking of good karma and bad karma......
I swear I've seen karma with an "h" but everywhere I look it seems to be without. I wasn't correcting your spelling sister. Hope you didn't think so, I was wrong anyway. Oh well this is just another excuse to say "I love you"
Great hub! Nothing weakens the true universal church like the introduction of whatever worldly thinking is fashionable at any given time. Eastern religions are certainly fashionable. Oddly enough, when worldly philosophies go out of fashion (think Gnosticism, Arianism, Deism, the cult of reason at the time of the French Revolution), it seems quaint to later generations, but biblical Christianity remains always unfashionable but always contemporary.
BTW, I understand the reason why in Jesus' parable the wheat and tares grew together until the harvest is that it is impossible to distinguish them until they ripen. At that time, the difference becomes obvious and it becomes possible to separate them with confidence.
lol. lol. lol. I KNOW the enemy is MAD!!!! Exposing him is a delight to me! And this is what you have done in this HUB!!! When Christians reveil the truth, he can't stand thos!! That's what it all boils down to!!!! Exposing him every chance we GET!!!! Amen sister, Jesus has your back! I tell you what, I rather expose the enemy and any trickery he trys to use than to sat back and not help others!!!! This s what I love about you, you will let the truth be known!!!!!!!!!!!!! lol, Praise God! I Love you sis! GREAT HUB!!!!
Thank you for presenting Scripture's spin in regard to karma. It's high time that the truth of "reaping and sowing" is firmly planted in the fields of HubPages. Your research in comparing the karma and Christianity is much appreciated. I pray that the weeds of karmic teaching be rooted out from the hearts of well-meaning or unwitting Christians.
May this hub provide the "weed killer" bringing biblical balance back to the fore in regard to this truth.
Life is not dictated by karma, it is predetermined to come to pass in Christ. Well done Sister!
I would like to read some poems from my book Soul's Worth for accuracy.
Can you speak of things producing after their own kind. Christ redeems us from the curse of the law. What was the law as you see it.
Great Hub! I haven't seen one yet that ties karma in with Christianity, I thought that was a cool outlook. Thanks for sharing with all of us. God Bless!
I agree with you that though the Bible does teach about sowing and reaping, it doesn't mean that it teaches karma. People who believes so will be very much disappointed when trials and suffering come. They tend to question God why bad things happened to them even when they do good. Well, that partly explains why many abandon following Jesus. Great hub! God bless you!
Good hub. I have heard so many times, how much more will God test me, what have I done that is so wrong that all these bad things keep happenig to me. I have a very good friend who has definitely had her fair share of trials and tribulations. Now her thing to do is wonder why all these things happen even now when she goes to church and reads the bible. If only we would realize it goes deeper than attending church and reading our Bible. We go to church to worship our Lord with other believers, but that is not the only time to worship our God. We should always be mindful of our Father, never cease to pray. I think God uses these "bad things" to bring us closer to him, make him more dependant on him. If we are always going through trials and tribulations maybe we should take our eyes off of ourselves and put them fully on God. God aches for us, yearns for us and has infinite patience for us. Our trials and bad times are Gods chastening to bring us back to him. We do nothing on our own!
Happy New Year!
Great Hub, you told it like it is, I do not believe in Karma I believe in Jesus.
Excellent hubs
A great outlook on Karma! Very nice Post.
You have again taken a complicated subject and done an excellent job explicating it for your audience. Thanks for the fine read. It is illuminating.
Great Hub! God is greater than Karma!
Pam
This is a great HUB. 20 years ago God deliverd me out of New Age. (quite an acomplishement, that is why I know that only God is all powerfull. smile)
I can 'smell' New Age' from farrrrr. it is saddening when our brothers and sisters int he lord use this concepts and eventually corrupt their faith in CHrist. Because by believing that you can influence what happens to you by what you say or do or 'positivly confess' you are taking away from your faith to just believe that you can ask God wathever you need and He will supply your needs According to his wishes. I live completly by faith for almost 2 years now! Left everything behind, good job, pensioens, homes, cars and started over as a missionary! With no material goods but serving GOd. And He is faithfull again! He is providing for us. And it is so exiting to see as God provides after prayer. THanks God, God is not waiting for me to 'do good' or 'be good' to bless me! (it would probably never happen.)My natural man is strong and int he way. God bless you sister for this wonderfull hub. Love
Loved this! Fantastic! I am fascinated by the religions of the world. And to see them contrasted and compared in such an easily digestible form is praise worthy!
I was just thinking about this subject lately...difference between karma and sowing and reaping. Thank you so much for clarifying it for me. I knew that Karma wasn't a Christian philosophy but couldn't quite get what the difference was. enlightening hub. Thank you.
will do = )
nice article. However, Hindu sects are theistic and believe in God, but may have a different name for Him and may differ in the way to approach Him. So feel that performing austerities is the best, others feel that by performing devotion they will achieve success in spirituality.
but karma really is the same as "as yee sow, so shall yee reap." otherwise, how can you explain how one soul is born in a gutter, while another born in a palace?
good hub
I didn't mean to say that because a person is born in the gutter, stays in the gutter.
Conversely, a person born in a high place may end up in a very low position in life.
On the other hand, the three Magis knew that Jesus had been born, because they were astrologers.
what an extremely well written hub. i can see how someone might confuse karma with reaping what they sow. if i had ever giving it any thought i probably would have too. thanks for writing.
You write:
"Nothing we think, say or do determines a karmic cycle, for the Bible tells us that our “righteous works” are as filthy rags to the Lord (Isaiah 64:6), and that our righteousness is only in Jesus Christ, our Savior (2 Corinthians 5:21)! It is not by faith in our works (karma), but faith in Him whereby we are saved (Ephesians 2:8-9)! In fact, those who have the attitude of “entitlement” because of good works (even works done in His name) will be told to “Depart from Me, you who work iniquity!” (Matthew 25:41)"
You realize of course that what you're saying is that there is absolutely no reason to be decent or kind in this life, so long as you end it all by accepting Christ as your savior and asking His forgiveness? Why should I be charitable? That would be "ungodly" of me, since I would be thereby expressing "faith" in "my works"? Why should I not rape or kill, since I would thereby express "faith" in "my works" rather than in the grace of Christ? Sure, it might be the "right thing to do" to be charitable or not rape and kill people, but that's only by our human standards; you've asserted that the only standard that mattes (and this assertion is perfectly in line with Christian theology, which is one of the biggest reasons I rejected that theology a long time ago) is whether you have faith in Jesus.
If I have faith in Jesus, then it must naturally follow that I have faith in my salvation without regard to my earthly behavior. It sais right there, "It is not by faith in our works but faith in Him whereby we are saved." Therefore, what I actually DO doesn't matter one way or the other; just so long as I believe in Jesus while I do it.
What you've written here is an open license to do whatever I want, to whomever I want, without fear of repercussion - just so long as I believe Jesus is Lord, I've got nothing to worry about because I'm "saved."
You might want to re-think that line of argument.
I'm christian and belive in karma, i agree with you 100% on where karma comes from and as i said before i have to watch what i say about the Bible.
I think the ultimate truth is hidden in all religions and the Devil has done well to contaminate over the years.
I witness karma all the time and feel the drag of sin in my life now and then [when im not at my purist] to me it is either Gods direct law or the law of the universe, God created the universe but it could have been given it's own law, i think nothing can be without creation.....How did a tree come to be? how did the planet come to be? how did the solar system come to be? and so on and so fourth untill you can't answer any more and you come to God...
Karma can have many diferent names but it seems to fit everywhere from hinduism to christianty...the ying yang ballence of life, the Lord said " vengence is mine " and he does it better than anyone even if we dont understand it sometimes.
What are your thoughts on my take JD...?
I think the wicked do prosper [for a short while] in this world because the Devil runs it, but at the expence of their after life.
I think karma spans in to the next, or the after and the wicked will pay.
I know some wicked people and i see the drag of their sin....Oh do i see it, none of them are in a good place.
Jesus had a hard time courtesy of the Devil, good works are rewarded in heaven, sometimes here but mostly in heaven, i have a hard time when i'm at my purest and the Devil knows how to tempt me.
I have tryed to live like a saint and can manage a monks lifestyle for 2 weeks before i get overwhelmed by temptation.
If Jesus would have given in to the Devil in the desert he's life on earth would have been diferent to say the least, [at a price] but then you know all this anyway.
I know enough to know i know very little..
I'm not realy a reader or a wrighter more a viewer and a dooer.
Peace to you JD...
Absolutly.....God only wants the best, and to get the best you have to test.
Like a rally car in pre preduction testing beaten and broken till it's remade and able to take anything thats thrown at it. [sort of....a tiny bit]
im a believer in the unified religion of love...jus want to know a fact about this present existance......if god is all good and loves his children equally, why is it that people around the world are born with so much of injustice? i personally believe that we are suppose to be treated with equal amounts of everything......food, shelter, wealth,etc...to prove our selves to him. This is not the case around the world that we live today......so i believe just as the law of physics...that human exsistance is similar"FOR EVERY ACTION THERE IS A DIRECT AND OPPOSITE REACTION"....
nicely written......when u speak of satan...it sounds like a being seperate from god...why is there 2 seperate entities? We live in this world where evil prevails.....is satan so much more powerful than god....or is it that this world we live in is an illusion and that everything including good and bad is held in the palm of god's hands. We think this world that we live in is so simple but everything does it job perfectly except the highest form of creation....the seas come in and out...the world rotates even around the sun...everything in a perfect cycle.MY main point is cycle and if we think about gods creation in general not even science could explain it.I pesonally believe that reaching god is not about confessing to sins and just surrendering....i believe that we have to live a life of bliss.Everything around us should be god and love.....just as jesus did.....i strongly believe this!!!!
Hello, I'm new to the Hub, and I joined because of Judah's daughter. Keep up the good work, and service in the kingdom of God beloved! There are many lights on this circuit called the world, but yours truly do shine very bright. Never be without extra oil. Blessings to you and your beloveds and to all God's righteous and the elect.
To Christian understanding of Christ, Theology cannot be brushed aside for it concerns the Oracles of God, Like the early Christian Church problems of understanding The Trinity, which again was resolved through Theological understandings, to The Father, Son & Holy Spirit as three distinctive Persons in one GOD, having the same essence which essence is the perfect Unity to the words of Jesus "I am in the Father & The Father in me, Me & the Father are one". Christ was sent to redeem man back to GOD & when we by Faith live In Christ, to die in Him & be resurrected in Him, by his resurrection we become born again in Him & as man is diverse from one another & since no 2 people are the same, because of this diverseness man cannot come into the a unity among or by ourselves, our unity is attained IN Christ, the unity in the diversity in the perfection through His unity with The Father & The Spirit in the perfection of the Godhead, thus we get our fulness in Him, 'cause He is in the Fulness with the Godhead to COL Ch 2:9 ;For in Christ is all the fulness of the Godhead bodily" which is to our fulness in Him & to this Compare the Trinity of Hinduism projected as one Body with 3 heads & if the stories of the 3 heads are read, then what is seen is total strife between the 3 heads, even unto changing the sexes for supremacy of one over the other through Power & Might which basically is the state of man & if that be termed as god in the disunity where can then man get his unity to the peace, thus undermining the very definition of the word God & to this the Bible says "Not by might neither by power but by my Spirit" says the lord of Host & so it is left to any one to discern which is True & which is false.
Judah's Daughter: To your misunderstanding of the word Catholic which means Universal to the Church, the body of Christ, for Christ is Universal in the truth, not just to earth, for by Him were all things created seen & unseen, for Him, moreover it is obvious that to the Revelation of the Covenant in the Spirit, your answer is Nay. The word is not, God of Abraham, Issac & Jacob but The God of Abraham, The God of Issac, The God of Jacob which is one God, revealed unto Moses as "I AM" to which name Time does not apply, if time be applied it would read as I was, am, & will be which is to mean Life, again means The life which has no beginning or end beyond human contemplation by the mind. When it is said Lord your GOD is one Lord, is again to the saying to The Father, The Son ,The Holy spirit in its "absolute perfection" in the word Fulness, to the meaning of a singular, unlike the Hindu heads which is not to. Why did then Jesus say "I am in the Father & the Father in me, me & the Father are one & why is it written Baptize in the name of The Father,The Son & The Holy Spirit which are three distinct names & if it be understood as one name, that would be 'Modalism" to the error, which at one time plagued the early Church & why do the four beasts The Seraphims surrounding the Throne sing "Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord GOD Almighty---.& why did 3 angels approah Abraham before the destruction of Sodom & Gomorrah to why is he called, friend of God to the revelations & why did Jesus tell the Pharisees "For your Father Abraham rejoiced greatly at seeing me,why do you not". The truth is that again the human mind cannot contemplate the perfection of The Father,The Son, The Holy Spirit to be one GOD in a singular way. And to your other question of Karma it is written Man shall die once & then the Judgement, so no question of reincarnation or karmas, for if there be it is nothing but a waste of time, for it is impossible to remove sin by own works no matter how many times one lives, but by faith In the Christ which comes through the Mercy of God. The Karma may be the standard to the other so called heaven wherein are the Principalities & Powers & wickedness in those heavenly places. Thanks & keep up your good works to the Kingdom- With love & an advise, understand the Bible not as another Book in the interpretations of the mind, even unto its translations of the languages & its changes over the times till the day but through the revelations of the Spirit, for the Bible comes by the inspiration of GOD, for the ways of God are not to interpretations, but to the revelations & it is to this that the Holy Spirit was sent unto us.
Judah's Daughter: It sadden's me that to none of the three's have you given me a straight & correct answer & this is exactly what happens & is typical to the twists in trying to explain the word of God in the interpretations off the mind, for you do not even seem to understand as to what it is to be revealed in the Spirit,& you say a human mind which is carnal be a Spiritual mind, for the carnal mind is quick to blame because it is void of Spiritual understandings which come not of the mind, that which is corrupted especially when it comes to the truth of God for if Today Jesus were to come to such a mind it would be to His crucification again, to the very reason you cannot discern the difference between Pagan beliefs & the Catholic/Traditional beliefs, like wise thought the Protestants & the Reformers of yester years who sought to bring about a stronger faith, not knowing that faith is faith to a totality which has no High or Low, but alas all their strength has given way to an anarchy with many falling away & into the Agendas of Caesar seen today, & the main ones that remain standing today to a good extent are the Catholic & the tradition Churches in the faith, irrespective of the accusations which according to you must be strange but the truth you see with your own eyes. Suggest go again through what ever I have given you, not to rush on it, pray in the spirit & your corrections will come off Biblically according to your faith in Jesus Christ, in deed.
"Salvation is off the Jews", Jews do not bring the salvation, but by the God of Abraham come through Christ Jesus, come as the root & offspring of David, even unto the root of man for this man Jesus is called Yeshua which means salvation again to the understanding "Yeshua(salvation)is off the Jews" for the fools & the proud who think they are salvation, to the words of Jesus in revelations "They call themselves Jews but are the synagogues of satan" like satan who uses the scriptures to condemn others just as satan himself tried against Jesus to his own condemnation, not knowing God who is Spirit, which truth is revealed to the Children of Abraham in the blood & in his faith to that in Christ & just as Abraham greately rejoiced at seeing the salvation in his time is again to my testimony as a witness to this time, For Jesus Christ came not to condemn but to save, so woman fall not into the viles of satan for your mind is strong but spirit unwilling, caught in the transgression, the very reason why the Bible calls for women not to preach over men but to obedience

Very well written. Karma is indeed a New Age belief rooted in superstitions and false religions. This day and time we live, most don't think that any religion can be false. They are building their own Tower of Babel, and like the former, the latter will also be destroyed.
