ROCK of OFFENSE

Jesus: The Rock of Offense
Do you find yourself offended by some teachings that contradict what you’ve always been taught? If something doesn’t align with your beliefs you just quickly shut it off and don’t listen? Truly, there are some teachings that don’t align with the Word of God. Does what you believe align with the full Word of God? Are you one who studies to show thyself approved? Do you test what it is that’s being taught? Do you trust the teachers of this world more than you trust what the Bible says?
Isa 8:14 “Then He shall become a sanctuary; But to both the houses of Israel, a stone to strike and a rock to stumble over, And a snare and a trap for the inhabitants of Jerusalem.”
Rom 9:33 “just as it is written, ‘Behold, I lay in Zion a stone of stumbling and a rock of offense, and he who believes in Him will not be disappointed." (also see Isa 28:16)
1 Pet 2:7-8 “This precious value, then, is for you who believe; but for those who disbelieve, ‘The stone which the builders rejected, this became the very corner stone’, and, ‘a stone of stumbling and a rock of offense’; for they stumble because they are disobedient to the word, and to this doom they were also appointed.”
Jesus is the Rock of offense to those who would rather stick to their traditional teachings and habitual beliefs. The Jews were greatly offended by Jesus Christ’s teachings. If they are God’s chosen ones, why would the Word of God offend them? The Word became flesh and they crucified Him. Why? Because Jesus claimed to be God (Luke 5:21; Mark 2:7; John 8:58-59). Does that offend you, too? Do you believe Jesus Christ is God, who came in the flesh?
Upon This Rock
Let’s look at this Rock in the pages of the Word:
Ps 18:2 “The LORD is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer, My God, my rock, in whom I take refuge; My shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.”
Ps 19:4 “Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart Be acceptable in Your sight, O LORD, my rock and my Redeemer.”
2 Sam 22:37 “The LORD lives, and blessed be my rock; And exalted be God, the rock of my salvation”
1 Cor 10:3 “all ate the same spiritual food; and all drank the same spiritual drink, for they were drinking from a spiritual rock [petra] which followed them; and the rock [petra] was Christ.” (Ref Ex 17:6; Num 20:11; Ps 78:15; 105:41)
A Doctrine of Error
In Mat 16:18 our Rock states, “I also say to you that you are Peter [petros], and upon this rock [petra] I will build My church; and the gates of Hades will not overpower it.”
Everyone knows the Catholic church built their foundation upon Peter. The Pope feels he has authority as God’s vicegerent (a deputy appointed to act on the authority of a ruler or magistrate, especially in administrative duties). "The Pope is of great authority and power, that he is able to modify, declare, or interpret even divine laws. The Pope can modify divine law, since his power is not of man, but of God, and he acts as vicegerent of God upon earth..." Lucius Ferraris, in "Prompta Bibliotheca Canonica, Juridica, Moralis, Theologica, Ascetica, Polemica, Rubristica, Historica", Volume V, article on "Papa, Article II", titled "Concerning the extent of Papal dignity, authority, or dominion and infallibility", #30, published in Petit-Montrouge (Paris) by J. P. Migne, 1858 edition. Ref: http://www.lightministries.com/id523.htm
Why is it the Catholic catechism does not teach the 10 Commandments as written in the Holy Bible? They leave out the second commandment and split the ninth into two. What is that second commandment? “You shall not carve idols for yourselves in the shape of anything in the sky above or on the earth below or in the waters beneath the earth; you shall not bow down before them or worship them.”
Do Not Add to or Take Away from God's Word!
Not only that, but the Textus Receptus (does that sound Latin to you? It is!) added to the Word of God. Truly, it was Catholicism that introduced the doctrine of Lucifer (Latin insertion) and God in three persons. The latter violates the first commandment. There were no Catholic or Protestant denominations in the early Church. Protestantism branched off of the Catholic church. The KJV was translated to English from the Textus Receptus! Are you offended? Are you willing to test this truth for yourself? Let me help get you started.
Believe it or not Desiderius Erasmus Roterodamus was the one who first translated the Hebrew and Greek texts into Latin, known as the Textus Receptus. He was a Roman Catholic priest. He added the "trinity" of Father, Son and Holy Spirit/Ghost to Matthew 28:19 and inserted what is known as the Johannine Comma in 1 John 5:7. Truly God is the Father. God is the Son. God is the Holy Spirit. He is God; not three, but one and only one God. What does God’s Word say about those who add to or take away from the Word of God?
Deut 4:2 “You shall not add to the word which I am commanding you, nor take away from it, that you may keep the commandments of the LORD your God which I command you.”
Rev 22:18-19 “I testify to everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this book: if anyone adds to them, God will add to him the plagues which are written in this book; and if anyone takes away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God will take away his part from the tree of life and from the holy city, which are written in this book.”
While Satan would have people throw out their faith in the entire Word of God, we will not throw the baby out with the bathwater! Did Jesus not say that tares would be sown among the wheat? The Seed is the Word of God! (Luke 8:11) The other seed sown among the good seed is of the Adversary (Mat 13:28).
He is I AM
Study for yourself. The word “Yehovah” is the long-form of “YHVH”. It is translated as LORD in the Old Testament. The first commandment states clearly:
Ex 20:2-3 “I am the LORD [Yehovah] your God [Elohim], who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery. You shall have no other gods [elohim] before Me.” (see John 20:28)
The Greek word for Jehovah is Kurios. Note the following verses:
Rom 10:9 “if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord [Kurios], and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved” Now, WHO raised Jesus from the dead? Jesus said in John 2:19, “Destroy this temple and in three days I will raise it up….He was speaking of the temple of His body.” (v. 21)
1 Cor 12:3 “no one can say, ‘Jesus is Lord [Kurios],’ except by the Holy Spirit.”
1 Tim 3:16 is clear: “And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory.”
How do we confirm this?
Ex 3:13-14 state, “Then Moses said to God, ‘Behold, I am going to the sons of Israel, and I will say to them, 'The God of your fathers has sent me to you.' Now they may say to me, 'What is His name?' What shall I say to them? God said to Moses, ‘I AM WHO I AM’; and He said, ‘Thus you shall say to the sons of Israel, 'I AM has sent me to you.'"
Compare this to Jesus’ words in John 5:28 “Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was born, I AM [Ego Eimi]." I AM is not past tense here, as ‘before Abraham WAS”.
Ps 23:1 tells us “The LORD is my Shepherd”. Jesus said in John 10:11 “I am the good Shepherd”.
Jesus said in John 8:24 (in the Greek): "Therefore I said to you that you will die in your sins; for unless you believe that I AM [Ego Eimi], you will die in your sins."
Isa 43:11 tells us, “I, even I, am the LORD, And there is no savior besides Me.”
Isa 45:21 tells us, “And there is no other God besides Me, A righteous God and a Savior; There is none except Me.”
Do the words “God and Savior” mean there are two? Look at Acts 26:16 “I have appeared to you, to appoint you a minister and a witness” This does not indicate you will be two people.
Hos 13:4 tells us, “Yet I have been the LORD your God Since the land of Egypt; And you were not to know any god except Me, For there is no savior besides Me.”
Who Do YOU Say That I AM?
The Church was founded upon the Rock of Jesus Christ. Peter confessed who Jesus was in the flesh, the Son of God. However, look at what the Apostle Peter wrote in 2 Pet 1:1: “Simon Peter, a bond-servant and apostle of Jesus Christ, To those who have received a faith of the same kind as ours, by the righteousness of our God and Savior, Jesus Christ.”
Look at what Thomas said when Jesus asked him to touch His hands and side: "My Lord [Kurios – Greek for Yehovah] and my God [Theos – Greek for Elohim]!" (see Ex 20:2-3)
What did the Apostle John have to say in 1 John 5:20 “And we know that the Son of God has come, and has given us understanding so that we may know Him who is true; and we are in Him who is true, in His Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God and eternal life.”
2 Cor 13:1 “In the mouth of two or three witnesses shall every word be established.”
Furthermore, what does Rev 4:8 tell us? "Holy, Holy, Holy is the Lord God, the Almighty, who was and who is and who is to come." (see also Isa 6:3) Who is to come? Yeshua, the Lord! Indeed, He came unto His own, but His own received Him not (John 1:11). They didn't recognize Him and surely crucified Him. He is coming again, saints. This is why the Jews will mourn when they see Him coming in the clouds, for they will look upon the One whom they pierced (Rev 1:7-8; Zech 12:10).
Thy Kingdom Come
Who’s kingdom will reign forever? The kingdom of God! The prophet Daniel, by the Holy Spirit, told us in 2:4, “You continued looking until a stone was cut out without hands, and it struck the statue on its feet of iron and clay and crushed them. Then the iron, the clay, the bronze, the silver and the gold were crushed all at the same time and became like chaff from the summer threshing floors; and the wind carried them away so that not a trace of them was found. But the stone that struck the statue became a great mountain and filled the whole earth.” This passage is speaking of kingdoms of man being shattered by the King of kings! His kingdom will reign forever.
If you want to follow the kings of this world; if you don’t believe Yeshua (which is from the Hebrew root of Yehowshua – YHWH Saves) is YHVH, ask yourself if you are studying to shew thyself approved. Do you know Him? God knows the intent of your heart. He desires that you know Him fully. What is more important that that? God is not the Author of confusion, but of peace (1 Cor 14:33). He is the Prince of Peace!
Isa 9:6 sums it up: “For a child will be born to us, a son will be given to us; And the government will rest on His shoulders; And His name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace.”
Acts 4:12 “And there is salvation in no one else; for there is no other name under heaven that has been given among men by which we must be saved."
Hos 13:4 tells us, “Yet I have been the LORD your God Since the land of Egypt; And you were not to know any god except Me, For there is no savior besides Me.”
I leave you with the Words of Jesus, Who is the TRUTH:
John 14:7-10 “from now on you know Him, and have seen Him…How can you say, 'Show us the Father’?”
His name is Jesus, Yeshua, Immanuel, I AM.

A great exposition Judah's Daughter as Jesus truly is offensive to tradition and habit.
Many, if not most, people do not like to see or hear things that conflict with their deeply held beliefs. The Jews response, as you pointed out, was to kill the Messenger.
Observations suggest that the more committed a person (or institution) is to an action or belief, the more resistance to information that threatens that belief, and the more there will be attempts to defend the long held beliefs. Some, in order to convince themselves that they are right or wise or knowledgeable, may go so far as to argue the credibility of clear evidence to the contrary.
"Jesus is the Rock of offense to those who would rather stick to their traditional teachings and habitual beliefs. The Jews were greatly offended by Jesus Christ’s teachings. If they are God’s chosen ones, why would the Word of God offend them? The Word became flesh and they crucified Him. Why? Because Jesus claimed to be God" AMEN! AMEN!
A great hub not only in terms of Jesus, the Rock of offense, but also a lesson in human behavior. Thanks for sharing.
Grace and peace,
Forever His,
That song comes to mind..."On Christ The Solid Rock I Stand, all other ground is sinking sand!" Psalms 28:7 is one of my favorite verses, has helped me through many hard times:) Another thought provoking hub, His daughter!
Beautiful job on this exquisite hub sister JD! And your timing is so perfect, I was just talking on the phone for 1 hour to an exjw about this very subject!
She and I have become friends and she has questions about God's name and personage. This hub came through as an e-mail to me from hubpages, just after I hung up with her! I am going to e-mail her with a link to this teaching, as you have summed it up so beautifully here!
As always, I learn and grow as I visit you hubsite my sister, you have blessed me once again! Praise God!
I have had conversations with several Jehovahs witnesses over the years. They are very sincere in their faith and I believe many of them have actual saving faith. They shared with me their thoughts about the diety of Christ and I showed them many of the same scriptures you included in this wonderful hub. In the end at least most had questioned their dogmatic doctrine of Christ not being God in the flesh. I say many had saving faith because they understood clearly their need for salvation and the wages of sin. They knew that Christ had shed His blood to pay the debt of sin. They asked for and received forgiveness on the basis of His shed blood. And repented of their sin. While I know the doctrine of the Trinity is not stated as such in a specific verse and the word trinity is not mentioned in holy scripture, I believe it is clearly stated in the verses you mentioned and in many others. They told me after conversing with me that even though I am not part of their group, they believed my name was in the book of life. My point is that there are many differing views as far as correct doctrine is concerned. I don't believe any group can lay claim to infallible doctrine. Neither Baptist Methodist Presbyterian Interdenominational Nondenominational Holiness Charismatic nor any other can say we are the only ones that believe exactly right, our interpretation is flawless. I said that to say this, Jesus prayer in John 17 was that we would be one as He and the Father are one. I believe with you that Jesus was is and always will be fully God. If someone disagrees, I will first embrace them as brother as I gently instruct them. If we still disagree, fine. There is only one thing we must agree on, we are sinners, Christ came to save sinners, repent and believe. Love this hub. Sorry my response was so long.
I only read a little bit of this hub and have to comment. The Catholics believe Peter to have been the first pope from what I understand. I can't believe how naive they are. Have they actually read the Bible?
If you will recall, Paul and Peter had an argument over Peter not preaching to the gentiles when any Jews were nearby. He preached mainly to the Jews because he was afraid of being persecuted for preaching to gentiles.
Now my question would be this. Are Catholics really Jews in disguise?
Sorry, I just had to point that out for those who are interested.
I haven't learned Greek yet so thank you for inserting the Yehovah Kurios notes. It is helpful. I wish the english translators would have used specifically the correct words. It helps the terms to not become generic in our understanding and sometimes changes the whole meaning and context of the verse.
We all need to be like the Berean's with every belief and doctrine and go to the scriptures and see if it agrees with what the scriptures say. Your hub does that very thing.
useful informative hub.
Great work!
Good hub and well done with explaining the orignal words in the Greek and translating them. I do have one problem about Textus Receptus. According to what IU have found out about it, it came well after the King James translation. According to the site bewlow it was first done in 1624. T%he King James translation was done in 1611.
http://www.biblicist.org/bible/receptus.shtml
My previous coment was only about Peter because that is where I stopped reading before.
Great word Judah's Daughter! Yes, we need to be discerning about false teaching. Keep up the good work!
I am not frustrated wiht Peter the rock and all that jazz. I wasmerely trying to point out how the Catholic hurch is wrong calling him the first Pope.
Sister: I've been a believer and following of God for a long time. Although, I have a hard time wrapping my mind around the infinite things of God, I realize our Bible was translated by someone who I pray was led by the Holy Spirit. I chase down the scriptures to make sure what I'm told is so. My question: in your opinion, what's the most careful translation of God's word?
You are growing spiritually and so is James I can see a change in both of the two of you and it is good and wonderful. Great hub!
The scriptures are not broken. There is no new thing under the sun. That which was prophesied is not new. By two or three witnesses, yes! and lucifer cannot be a doctrine because lucifer is only mentioned once and once is not enough.
Beautiful, awesome, useful, and up what a great hub you knocked it out on this one Praise God for your willingness to follow what the Lord God puts on your heart.
Hi JD. I voted this one up. What I've always found a little odd is that Jesus didn't explicitly state He was God, but only aluded to it, and talked continually about His Father. Thanks for all the references tying together Rock and Saviour which make it pretty clear He is God.
You didn't explore the Holy Spirit here though. My understanding is that the Holy Spirit is not a separate God entity independant of thought and deed from the Father and Jesus as many suppose according to the Trintiy doctrine, but the Holy Spirit is actually God Himself in the sense of His Earthly manifestation of power. Jesus said that He and the Father will make their home in us, that being by His Spirit, His presence.
So we have one God the Father and one Lord Jesus Christ who is God come in the flesh, but the Holy Spirit is not some third part of the Godhead.
You teach this beautifully! It shines God's Word into my heart :) Yes, in my previous Bible translation work we stayed away from the Textus Receptus because it has a number of problems in it and there are more reliable Greek sources now. So glad you are making these points known to fight against the confusion and unbelief!
Blood and flesh did not reveal this to you, but the very Spirit of God :) (No problem, I don't think you missed any of my comments - you respond to every one, and I love it! :)
Judah's Daughter: Truly I am enlightened with this teaching. It is definitely a true blessing to find such a knowedgable sister as you that I can turn to to clarify scripture when I am not clear. Tahnk God for placing you on my path to Him.
Aye you too have stubbed your toe upon that rock yet know it not, for you have denied the testimony God has concerning his Son.. and have turned the Grace of God into a license to sin. Oh my the wages of sin is life you say.. just like your father said back in that day.. Repent while there is still time !!!!
You say the wages of sin is life according to your doctrine of demons and devils.. My Father who sent his Son, the word, the Lamb who took away the sins, the death, of the world, that word which would not fail, that word was sent to destroy the works of the devil not add to them as you say he will do.. Have you not read that he who shows no mercy will recieve no mercy ? therefore according to your teaching the Father will have to punish his Holy Son with no mercy being that according to you the Son will show no mercy to the majority of his creation.. Burning them in an endless fire with pain and suffering.. Do you understand this simple truth ?? Oh my say the children of the livng God, she knows the difference between right and left yet is confused between love and hate.. Teaching lies having her concience seared as with a hot iron. Know ye not the the doctrine of hell is an abomination,an dessecration of my Fathers Holy name ?? Know ye not that what measure of judgement you use shall be used against you ?? He who shows no mercy will recieve no mercy.. I have seen your end therefore repent of your evil doctrine of hell..least you continue to be counted among the synagogue of Satan thinking yourself to be among the wise yet not knowing even the most basic of truths.. Repent for you are both decieved and decieving others with this doctrine of hell, an outright slap in the face to the Holy name of both Father and Son.. I,Pamitchrus, have seen him and in him is no darkness at all..My God is above sin yet you accuse him and the Son of an evil thing.. Again I have seen your end.. Repent of this evil teaching.. It would be far better for you to teach lessons on baking cakes than to continue to profane the Name of our Holy God.. Shelah..
Aye so be it .. Catch up with you later you who says the wages of sin is life(eternal torture) Think on this and perhaps you will yet recieve light !!! Oh how I wish you could see, and one day you will in this I will take my comfort.. Good bye for now and my how heavy a burden that concordance shall be for you one day. Even now my heart is torn for you.. I am.

Great hub sister dear. Thanks for the hard work.
