VIM: Very Important Member!
72
You are a Member!
In reading 1 Corinthians 12, I began to ponder why so many groups, regardless of size, seem to either grow stronger or weaker. Some work together like fingers in a glove; some seem like they’re trying to shove a foot in a glove. People struggle to find acceptance or a sense of belonging. People can feel lost; some are power-hungry; some are simply passive and don’t participate. Indeed, everyone is part of one group or another, whether it be marriage, family, church, workplace or sports; just to name a few.
In my hub GOD: Let Us Make Man In Our Image? we looked at the definition of “God”, which is the Hebrew word elohim (Greek word theos). We saw that God, though He is the Creator and LORD of heaven and earth, encompasses His heavenly host and even us, as believers, into His body. In other words, we are members, knit together as a unit.
Paul’s message to the church at Corinth taught them about God’s system of governance. We all know that God is not the Author of confusion. Chaos is not His way. As Christ is the head of His body, the husband is the head of his wife and they parent their children together. Likewise, the church has pastors, elders, deacons, teachers, administrators and other various ministries. Even the world has a system of governance made up of primary leaders, advisors, federal, state, county and city officials, all the way down to law-abiding citizens. Each and every member of humanity affects every other member, bringing order or chaos.
Divine Design
God is the God of divine design. Look at creation itself! If the earth were too close to the sun it would burn up. The trees alone give off oxygen and bear fruit so we can breathe and eat. The oceans and sky provide the perfect moisture balance for all things to thrive. From the creation of the heavens and earth to the smallest little ant, order is designed to bring functionality. Truly, when order turns to chaos, function becomes dysfunction.
Consider your own body. If one part of your body suffers, your whole body suffers. If you break your arm, you certainly wouldn’t let it just hang there in pain. You would immediately seek medical attention and follow the doctor’s directions! If you were to lose your sight, you’d be amazed that the rest of your senses would naturally become stronger. We often take our body parts for granted until there’s an injury or loss!
Just as our own bodies have various “members”, so do groups of people working together toward a common goal. Truly, we are to love our neighbor as ourselves, amen? It is imperative that we recognize each is an “arm” or an “eye” and do our best to contribute to the building up and strengthening of the body. Every part of the body is valuable! You are valuable!
What determines our value? Is the grower of the vine any less important than the pickers, packagers, shippers, receivers, distributors, grocery store employees, chefs or consumers? What if one link to the chain was missing? Is a doctor more valuable than the man who paves the highway? It all depends on what we consider to be valuable. See, God’s kingdom is not of this world, nor is it based on the dollar. Everyone is vitally important to the functioning of the kingdom.
Consider how all of us are called to different careers. Some desire to be morticians or garbage collectors, preachers, teachers, home-makers, administrators and construction workers. Thank God He designed humanity this way else we could not function as a whole!
1 Corinthians 12:20-27
While it’s best to read all of 1 Corinthians 12, we’re going to highlight verses 20-27:
“But now there are many members, but one body. And the eye cannot say to the hand, ‘I have no need of you’; or again the head to the feet, ‘I have no need of you.’ On the contrary, it is much truer that the members of the body which seem to be weaker are necessary; and those members of the body which we deem less honorable, on these we bestow more abundant honor, and our less presentable members become much more presentable, whereas our more presentable members have no need of it.
“But God has so composed the body, giving more abundant honor to that member which lacked, so that there may be no division in the body, but that the members may have the same care for one another. And if one member suffers, all the members suffer with it; if one member is honored, all the members rejoice with it. Now you are Christ's body, and individually members of it.”
HATS!
Consider all the “hats” one person can wear: child of God, spouse, parent, church member, career professional, sports coach, etc. That’s enough to exhaust anybody. Instead of getting frustrated when someone drops the ball, we should step up and do what we can to help. Let’s go through each of these “hats” and ponder how we can apply God’s principles:
As believers, it is important to spend time with God in prayer. Likewise, we must listen and obey His promptings throughout the day. He is our daily bread. Don’t fast when it comes to Jesus! Thank God for being able to participate as a member of His body each and every day.
In our homes, the husband is to be the head of the household. A wise husband would find out what his wife’s natural abilities are and encourage her to function in those gifts. She might be a finance whiz. He might enjoy cooking. She may love yard-work while he tinkers with home improvement projects. Likewise, children have gifts and interests that will contribute to the family as a whole. We need to teach our children and have patience with them. The more we invest in them, the stronger their future will be. Just like family chores, sports is a great way to teach kids the principles of team “membership” that will extend far beyond the arena.
Perhaps you’re thinking about joining a church fellowship. It’s important that the members there receive you; that you’re able to feel like you belong. God gave you gifts to use as a functioning part of that body. So often the “system” is already in place and you might feel there’s no opportunity to serve. Or, it could be you’re asked to function as a “foot” when you are really a “hand”. Churches need to find out what each member’s gifts are and place them accordingly. Doing so will cause the body of Christ to GROW; amen!
An employer wouldn’t place a person in a position without checking his/her skills first, right? Resumes let the employer know what qualifications the applicant possesses that would be beneficial. A new employee entering the workplace shouldn’t be “thrown to the wolves” and told to “sink or swim”; no! A wise Company would suffer a temporary set-back in productivity in order to train the new member to be a valuable asset to the team!
We're All VIM's!
Let us remember that all members of the body are very important! Those who are “weaker” or “less honorable” need our assistance, just like we do. Be an active part of the team. No one is to be a “couch potato”! There is no “I” in “team”, right? If we begin to think and operate as a body, appreciating every member’s contribution, we are sure to make order out of chaos and reap harmony and success! Be blessed!
I Stumbled this Hub because it needs to be seen. Every one of us has a place somewhere. A job and a gift we can bring to the table for God. A janitor has their job. Without that person, things would be in disarray and a mess. The poor janitor might be looked down on by others who feel their position is "higher" or more important.
Perhaps somebody's job is to write for God on Hub Pages. Somebody somewhere will be saved from terrible mistakes or may receive something that will help them tremendously. We might write 105 Hubs, yet if one person comes to Christ because of a sentence in one we wrote, we've been part of that person's salvation and healing.
So, whether we are looked at as the one who's last on everyone's list or the valedictorian who pulls all the drama, fame and whatever, each of us can be that instrument God uses to reach out to that one person who is standing on the edge of the pit.
Thank you for doing this. Many shall be helped.
Wonderful JD please find attached a Hug especially for all your hard work and a praise going straight to the Father for laying this onto your heart.
Accountability and awareness are a part of the struggle we do not see brought forward in gathering, Christian or Secular, when mentioned well people leave in anger.
We are fast to point out the faults of others and yet do we do it directly and when we do I pray that the Father shows me what I see in the other is maybe something I see in me and I dislike it, fail to claim it and feel better by pointing fingers.
A rule that I have adopted and it is still hit and miss for me, "Boot Camp" search my heart oh Lord before I place my foot in my mouth and become a hypocrite.
Belonging to a power hungry group is a waste of Gods precious time He gives us. Working as a part of the body using the gifts that are given to us are far more inviting.
I have been reminded of late of the importance that "Let your yes be your yes and your no be your no". There is no such thing as a grey area and thank I say alway, there is no compromise
To this Hub I say a resounding YES...
Many Blessings
I believe that God has a place for everyone but that sometimes we are to learn to be useful for that place before God places us there. A man may realize he needs a church body but not FEEL that a particular group is a "perfect" match for him. God has a perfect match in mind. However, sometimes He wants us to have learned a few things sometimes before He places us in that church. Perhaps our desire is to serve as teacher or deacon or some other useful function and we don't realize we are not ready to fit the way he wants us to or that that perfect place needs us to. Where do we find the training ground. Well we certainly wouldn't find that by not going to church because we are not to "forsake the assembling of ourselves together." I believe we are to obey and in the obeying we are led to that perfect place. Sometimes the place that seemed to FEEL not perfect is the exact place we will be most useful. Leading of the Spirit is the most important. I find feelings to lie to you just when they seem to be telling you the most truth. They are sometimes manipulated by Satan or the flesh. However, feelings as a measure of Joy are undeniable. I know you my sister and I know you wouldn't let your fleshly feelings rule your life. You are a "perfect" sister for me. You are an example of what Paul said, "follow me and I'll follow Christ." I love you sis, with all my heart.
We went to visit my Father-in-Law the other day, who lives in an assisted living home. We had lunch with him in the dining room and sat a a big table, expecting other family members to arrive. An elderly lady came up to sit and was uncomfortable about it until we welcomed her to join us. she needed to feel like a VIM. then another came and I wondered what we would do with the rest of the family, but ignored the thought knowing we would figure it out. Then we asked if they would pray with us for the food and they were so delighted to join us. Then I saw a young man with down's syndrome sweeping the floor -happily doing his part and I just wanted to hug him. Anyway -I love the idea of VIM. In the body of Christ we all have a place and the table we feast at is round -
This hub is great! Well put together and just makes plain sense to me. Often many don't see this and they are the "cream of the crop" and think that they became the "cream of the crop" by themselves. In actuality many people lower and lowest below helped someone to rise up.
Ironically, I have met more people in my life who have come from 'hell on earth' and spiritually raised themselves to such a high place--and I have to wonder when I look at others who have had the 'charmed life' and ask myself...
When we are lower and broken and most weakest--are we not more easily rebuilt by God because of these weaknesses, tempered metal-until we are strong? (sorry..you just jogged some deep thoughts in me and I am rambling) ;)
Thank you, Judah's Daughter for your insight! All Christians should understand this concept. Peace!
Too often, one gets to that lofty place where they tend to forget where God brought them from. The blessing and the healings have all faded into the past somewhere as we sit so piously judging others believing we are now "above" them because of our current stature. Do we not realize that what God giveth He can take away?
When we walk away from our testimony, failing to give God the glory, what, then, is the purpose of our blessings if not to show others so they can see the clear manifestations of God in our lives?
Should we decide to forget where we came from? Let me remind you God has a way of giving us a refresher course and it won't be pleasant.
We do need each other very much. Everyday I lifted up many hurting people that believe it's it for them, NO HOPE! But Jesus says, differently I tell them, and then I take them down a road of HOPE! Sometimes people like to have pitty on themselves which is another device that the enemy uses to deceive many! I also love your illustration of HATS! When I read: As believers, it is important to spend time with God in prayer. Likewise, we must listen and obey His promptings throughout the day. He is our daily bread. Don’t fast when it comes to Jesus! Thank God for being able to participate as a member of His body each and every day. This really touched my heart for if a person would do this everyday, their lives would be more manageable. I am a witness to this! Amen Sister, AMEN! Love you!
I like this hub, because you have made it plain and clear that there must be unity in the Body of Christ. In a tactful way, the Holy Spirit has enable you to show us, that nobody is any better then the next person, we all have a ministry that is so important to the completeness of the Body of Christ. Great fantastic hub!
Hi JD I can see you have been very busy ( something new and different) lol.
Our Father does like variety. (-: I love how you made ths hub move in simplicity & understanding Very nice work JD. My Love and Blessings. I have missed your hubs, I will be back soon to read more. Shine on sister.
In 'HIS' Name+ + +
This was so good and it really did minister to me. I believe that God is telling the church this, in this last hour. We must know our place in the Body of Christ and whatever God has called us to do, we should do it as unto the Lord. We should not put ourselves in positions God has not called us to. You are so right! Outstanding hub!

Very nice hub.I agree as humans, we need each other for support and approval, for acceptance and love. Teamwork accomplishes many things and gives conformity and organizing attributes. If we isolate and refuse to participate in activities, we are destined to resentment, anger and all around anti-social choas. It is very necessary to feel needed and loved by others in order to be of sound mind and also to be healthy. VIM is a really great way of expressing what we are when we communicate with each other and lift each other up as we are supposed to do. We are all God's creation and He knows each one of us as a Very Important Member, and it is best to accept that love from above. Thank you Judah's Daughter for another share.
Have a blessed day! Art
